Alex Melencio
Nickname: “ALEX”
30 years old
Alex is currently working as a Clinical Site Practitioner at the Royal Marsden Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He was formerly a Junior Charge Nurse in Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust and a Diabetes Nurse Specialist in Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Since the pandemic started, he has devoted himself to serving suspected or confirmed Covid-19 patients. He even contracted the hideous disease which made him an inpatient for almost a week fighting for his life. At the end of such battle, he survived and shared his story to a number of people for the purpose of enlightenment and inspiration especially amongst the members of PNA-UK.
As he is an academic warrior, he is at the verge of completing the requirements to earn the degree of Master of Science in Cardiorespiratory Nursing at New Buckinghamshire University under the honorary privilege provided by the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust due to his exemplary intellectual acumen. He had acquired his Master of Arts in Nursing degree at the University of the Philippines specializing in Maternal and Child Health last 2019 and he finished Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 2011 graduating with flying colours in Far Eastern University – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRMF). His early years in the field of nursing were spent in Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital (DJFMH) and St. Luke’s Medical Center – Quezon City (SLMC-QC) in the Philippines as Maternal and Child Nurse and Emergency Care Nurse, respectively.
As a Clinical SIte Practitioner, he utilises operational and clinical knowledge as necessary to provide outstanding quality care and to maintain and further improve patient outcomes. Nevertheless, he provides strong clinical leadership and management in the hospital that he serves. Specifically, he acts as a highly visible clinical presence, role model and an autonomous practitioner in ensuring that safe effective decision making occurs to streamline the patient journey at admission, transfer and discharge. The support that he gives to the ward staff and matrons creates and maintains a safe yet therapeutic clinical environment for patients and their families who come to the hospital. He has proven proactive coordination, support, and activities across a variety of clinical settings. Last but not least, he supports a clinical learning environment that enables the members of the multidisciplinary team to develop professionally and promotes the use of evidence in practice.
Professionally, he has always been passionate in every endeavour that he takes. Apart from exemplifying the core values of a nurse, he has that desire to share and to inspire people especially his colleagues in the healthcare profession. He performs his duties and responsibilities in line with his scrupulous faith in God and in conjunction with caring principles which make him a supporter of Dr. Jean Watson, the proponent of the Theory of Human Caring.
On a personal note, he is amiable and easy to get along with. He loves going out with friends, watching Netflix and anime, reading online news and articles, and cooking Filipino dishes.
As a nurse, he is always guided by Watson's principle, “Caring is the essence of nursing.” Simultaneously, he is constantly believing in this philosophy of life: “Let your faith be bigger than your fear.”
